There was pandemonium at Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State on Christmas Day following the killing of a woman and four of her grandchildren by gunmen suspected to hired assassins.

The incident which struck the agrarian community between late Saturday evening and early hours of Sunday has created tension in the area.

Our correspondent gathered that the five-member family was shot before their apartment was set ablaze by the assassins. They were said to have been burnt beyond recognition.

The source gave the name of the grandmother as Madam Comfort Ubani, while the names of the four grandchildren, who were between the ages of six and 13-year-old, could not be immediately obtained as of the time of filing this report.

Another community source, Benjamin Ogbechie, while lamenting the gruesome killing, noted that the hoodlums struck when the deceased were still sleeping and could not do much to rescue themselves.

He said, “The victims were killed by unknown persons, who, thereafter, gathered the victims in the parlour and set them ablaze. The parlour did not burn much but a few household items like chairs and others were burnt.

“The grandmother and three of the children burnt right inside the parlour, while the fourth child, who was wearing a school uniform, was found dead somewhere else in the compound. The cause of fire we cannot tell, but we saw pieces of clothes forced into their mouths and wondered what could have caused that.”

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim visited the scene of incident on Sunday described the incident as pathetic and assured the community that police apprehend those behind the killing.

Ibrahim assured that the matter would not be sweep under the carpet as justice would be served for the deceased.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, while confirming the incident said investigation into matter had begun. He added that the corpses had been deposited at a morgue in the area pending investigations.
